A DIVER suffering from decompression sickness was rushed to Poole Hospital for emergency treatment after falling ill near Swanage.

The male casualty had been diving near Durlston Head when he began to show signs of the potentially fatal condition, also known as the bends, this morning.

A spokesman from Portland Coastguard said the skipper of the dive boat Viper raised the alarm at around 9am.

Portland Coastguard’s Rescue 106 helicopter was scrambled to the boat and airlifted the diver to the landing site at Whitecliff.

He was then transported to Poole Hospital via land ambulance for treatment in the hospital’s decompression chamber.
