THE proposed merger between Dorset and Wiltshire & Swindon Fire Authority looks set to become a reality.

Dorset Fire Authority members meet to make their final decision on the merger next week, after the results of a long-running public consultation revealed “overwhelming majority” support for the cost-cutting move which is hoped will save up to £6 million.

County fire chief Darran Gunter, who describes next Tuesday’s meeting as the most important in Dorset Fire Authority’s history, believes the merger option on the table is the best way to safeguard frontline services.

He said: “We have a fantastic fire and rescue service in Dorset and I am committed to protecting as far as possible the vital prevention and response arrangements we have.

“It is my view that a combination with the Wiltshire and Swindon Fire Authority is the option that will offer the best protection to frontline services and additionally improves our overall resilience.”

The consultation offered three options to residents for the future of Dorset Fire & Rescue Service.

Option one was to stay independent but work more closely with Bournemouth Council, Borough of Poole and Dorset County Council.

The second option was for DFRS to remain independent, while increasing its collaboration with the three councils and forge closer links with Wiltshire & Swindon Fire Authority.

According to DFRS, both of these options were cast aside in favour of the third – the full merger option.

Dorset Fire Authority chairman Cllr Rebecca Knox said: “My sincere thanks go to all our staff, partners and members of the public who have taken the time to express their views during the consultation.

“I know that when Dorset Fire Authority members meet next week they will want to ensure a safe, strong and sustainable fire and rescue service for the counties of Dorset and Wiltshire.

“The funding we will receive from government if the combination goes ahead shows their support for the project and the benefits it will bring to both counties.”

Tuesday’s Dorset Fire Authority meeting will be filmed and made available afterwards via DFRS’s YouTube channel. Wiltshire & Swindon Fire Authority will make its final decision on November 11.
