FIREFIGHTERS across Dorset are set to join four days of strike action from 6pm tonight.

Fires Brigades Union members nationally are taking industrial action from tonight until 6pm on Tuesday November 4. Normal cover will be in place on Bonfire Night.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service has a contingency plan and expects to have around half of its fire appliances to be available during this time, the 42nd period of strike action since September last year over the government’s reforms to the firefighters’ pension scheme.

Fire chiefs are urging the public to take extra care, especially with bonfires and fireworks around Halloween and in the run up to Bonfire Night.

Prevention manager at Dorset Fire and Rescue, Kate Underhill, said: “We are urging anyone who is using fireworks or having a bonfire to consider the potential fire risks.

“There are a few simple things that can be done to reduce these risks, always follow the instructions on each firework and light them at arm’s length, using a taper and ensure that bonfires and fireworks are away from sheds, fences and other flammable materials. But attending an organised firework event is the safest way to have fun.”
