FAMILIES are encouraged to have go with some musical instruments in a fun event in Poole hosted by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Poole Lighthouse will be opening its doors to children of all ages and their parents and carers on Sunday, April 12, for a day of musical exploration from 11am to 4.30pm.

Kids can take part in a song-making workshop, as well as an Instrument Petting Zoo, where everyone can try their hand at playing some orchestral instruments.

Dougie Scarfe, chief executive of BSO, said: "We are excited to be opening the doors of Lighthouse for the fantastic Meet the Music Open day on 12 April.

"We are looking forward to welcoming the community to share what we do and explore everything musical for the whole family."

Visitors can get involved in a question and answer sessions Mr Scarfe, the musicians and administrative staff of BSO, as well as its principal conductor, Kirill Karabits. In addition, there will be a chance to watch a full open rehearsal ahead of the Classic FM concert at the Royal Albert Hall on April 14.

Families are also encouraged to bring along any musical instruments that they own to be part of the first ever BSO Family Orchestra, with no need to be able to read music or have any grade certificates.

Elspeth McBain, chief executive of Lighthouse, said: "We are thrilled to be working with BSO to give our community a very rare and unique opportunity to experience the many different aspects of this world renowned orchestra all in one day of fabulous music making."

To help introduce children to the music of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, there will be two performances aimed at the younger members of the family.

Nine to 13-year-olds can become a member of the Time Travelling Tardis Team as BSO Resonate Strings lead the audience on a journey through space in time with tunes hailing from the sci-fi show.

Younger kids can enjoy the fun of the Mini BSO, featuring the full four families of music instruments found within the orchestra, to offer them an experience of classical music.
