NEW signposts situated around Bournemouth Town Centre have been drawing the attention of the public for the wrong reasons after spelling errors and timing inaccuracies were spotted.

More than 140 information hubs are expected to be installed in a bid to encourage more people to explore the town by foot.

One sign placed outside KFC in Holdenhurst Road featured a mis-spelling of Lansdowne Roundabout, while others near the underpass in St Paul’s Road appeared to be in the wrong order.

Tourists and residents of Bournemouth alike have been assessing the mistakes and questioning whether the proposal will be beneficial for the town.

Westbourne resident, Ann Lanton, said: “Before they install any more they need check everything visually and correct all the existing mistakes, but the idea of getting tourists to explore is a great because by the time you get on a bus and into traffic, you could have walked the distance in exactly the same time.

“However we need to remember that many residents in Bournemouth are retired, so they would be more reluctant to walk.”

Visiting the town, Helen Resland from Ringwood said: “I think the more information provided to the public the better, but they definitely need to fix the problem of spelling mistakes and timing inaccuracies. They have got to be realistic if they want people to walk round more.”

Jane Parkinson from Frogham added: “It is great for the people that don’t know the area, especially with showing the timings, but having mistakes is just careless”

Workers in the town have also stated that the signs do not stand out enough.

David Ragg, 48, from Lansdowne Florist, said: “In principal it is a good idea because we need something at this end of the town to direct people from the train station in the direction of the main attractions. I do think however that you could easily walk past without noticing them.”

Resort Information Manager, Charmaine Denny, told the Daily Echo: “We are aware of the concern with three of these signs and have made arrangements that they will be corrected at no cost to the council. Additional checks have been put in place to prevent any future issues.”

Several of the information hubs have also been positioned along the beachfront and Bath Road, but more are expected to be placed at Pier Approach, Horseshoe Common, the Triangle, and the Square whilst a network of way finding signs, footpath markers and finger posts will guide people around the town.
