RESIDENTS in Dorset have been reminded to stay safe near cliff edges and coastal paths.

The warning has come from the UK Coastguard, which has asked members of the public to ensure they remain safe.

Andrew Jenkins, maritime operations controller, has offered some general advice for those planning activities near cliff edges.

He said: “Make sure that you are properly equipped for walking along coastal paths. In particular, remember to wear sturdy shoes or boots and check the weather forecast before you set out.

“Do not attempt to climb up or down cliffs unless you are properly equipped and trained to do so. Do not attempt to climb cliffs as a short cut back to the top. Do not attempt self-rescue.

“If you get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard. Carry a mobile phone, tell people where you are going and when you expect to return.”

Peter Staddon, from Portland, photographed two men who appeared to be free solo climbing around Bob’s Crane, near Portland Bill.

The series of pictures show both men climbing up the rock face without using ropes.

Peter said: “I suppose they are probably a little bit experienced but when people see them do it they may think I’ll try that.

“I don’t agree with it.

Mr Staddon described the pair’s climbing attempt as a dangerous thing to do.

He said: “I know where they were was virtually solid rock but the Bill has taken such a hammering since 2014.”

A spokeswoman for the UK Coastguard said they were unable to comment on the images without speaking to the climbers involved.
