THOUSANDS of people enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in the sun at the 21st annual Stompin' on the Quomps jazz event on Saturday.

They enjoyed good food, good music and family entertainment at one of Christchurch's most popular annual events, which is continuing into the evening.

Visitors were treated to top quality music from the likes of Groovemeister, Not Just Sax, The Taverners, Lemongrove and Blue Commotion.

And this year it was easier to see the action thanks to a new, festival-type stage.

The addition of a top-quality sound system also made it easier for those gathered on the quay to hear the music and lessened the impact on local residents.

And the Absolute Music marquee saw some great sets from the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Bournemouth University Big Band.

One of the organisers, Adrian Dwyer, said: "Many years ago the event started with just a few people sitting around the bandstand but it has got bigger and bigger.

"It had become difficult for people to be able to watch the bands so we decided to go for a much bigger stage and an improved sound system.

"There are lots of things to do, including free taster sessions for those wanting to try African drumming."

The sunny weather ensured those gathered with their picnics had a pleasant afternoon and the fun was due to go on into the evening, attracting even more people.

Stompin' always attracts a varied crowd with toddlers and their great-grandparents all enjoying the fun.

Many families arrived early to get the best picnic spots, lots with tables, chairs and tablecloths. A wide variety of stalls ensured there was something for everyone.
