THE A338 Bournemouth Spur Road was closed following a crash involving a motorcyclist.

Traffic was brought to a standstill after the crash on Saturday afternoon.

Dorset County Council's Travel Dorset service said that the collision had taken place in the roadworks area and there were long delays.

The air ambulance was called to attend and a road closure was put in place, police said.

A police spokesman added that the crash happened at around 3.40pm and around half an hour later the road, which is currently a contraflow due to the roadworks, was closed between Ashley Heath and Blackwater.

A spokesman for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance said that the helicopter landed on the scene and took an adult casualty, later confirmed by police to be a 55-year-old man, to Southampton General Hospital with a fractured pelvis.

The collision involved a green motorbike and a black Ford Fiesta, police said.

Traffic on Matchams Lane, Parley Lane, the A347 New Road, the A348 through Ferndown and the A31 has been slow as motorists divert.

At 5.45pm, Travel Dorset said that the A338 had reopened.

Police thanked motorists for their patience and asked for any witnesses to the collision to contact PC 2464 Tatton at the traffic department on 101.
