Looking to try something new on your mobile or console? here's our pick of three of the best apps you might want to download this weekend.

Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey

iTunes

THERE'S little doubt that, in the next decade, the lines between big-boy consoles and their mobile counterparts will have blurred beyond the point of recognition.

For now, though, titles such as Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey act as a sporadic illustration of what true triple-A mobile titles should look like, presenting gamers with a challenge to differentiate them from what they see on their bigger TVs.

It's a stunning Japanese RPG, with enough combat, cool customisation and fantastical storylines to float the boat of any gamer with a penchant for the Final Fantasy series.

It's by no means perfect, which is a fact that's been amplified online since its release, given the premium price tag.

But the developers have responded admirably, and are now tackling the troubles of the save system and inventory access as a priority.

Such dedication to the cause will be much appreciated, and should foster a devoted following that appreciate the atmospheric, anime-action on offer here, and are willing to put their hands in their pockets for the portable experience.

Star Wars: Battlefront

PS4

ANYTHING on the Star Wars front in the run-up to Christmas will be rigorously assessed by hardcore fans for its mark of authenticity, in a commercialised world where the hype often over-promises on the end product.

But, whatever your level of adoration for one of the most famous film franchises of all time, Star Wars: Battlefront delivers online action, amusement, and that all-important authenticity in spades.

The audio experience alone is enough to send shivers down the spine, before you even open your eyes to witness the thrill of piloting an X-Wing, or plotting the downfall of an AT-AT onslaught.

A robust array of game modes provide a number of varied tactical challenges, supported by a series of rich, gloriously detailed maps.

Perhaps the only downside is that there aren't more environments to enjoy.

All the classic characters are there though and, allied to the excellent gameplay, Battlefront has done a brilliant job in crafting a top-notch shooter that has no doubt been aided by its subject matter as well as felt the intense pressure placed upon it by fans during development.

But worry not, the force is strong here!

Word2

iTunes

WORD searches can be hard enough to tackle when there is just one of each word to find, but Word2 takes this vocabulary puzzler to another level by challenging players to eke out each word twice on the same grid.

Starting with a 3x3 game environment, you're given ample opportunity to get to grips with the mind-bending concept, before the word square objectives take a jump on the difficulty front.

But by that point you'll have been so intoxicated by the brilliant audio that accompanies the stylish, slick and colourful visuals that the hair-tearing test of a 6x6 grid will be met more with a masochistic smile rather than hurling your smartphone out of the nearest window.

Developer BorderLeap regularly walks the line between marvellous, meditative time-munching and anger-inspiring brainteasers, and on this occasion, Word2 delivers another highlight for their small-screen app efforts to date, and one Scrabble fans should snaffle up ASAP.
