Radio 1's Big Weekend is just a few days away. But long before the popular event many know and love today, there was the Radio 1 Radioshow.

For the best part of three decades, the nation's favourite pop station sent its disc jockeys on the road to play to adoring crowds in seaside resorts.

Poole Park was among the locations for the roadshow in the 1970s but as the operation grew, it needed a new location.

By the 1980s, Bournemouth and Swanage were the regular local venues with crowds of up to 20,000 gathering to be part of the event.

Some of the biggest DJs of the day to bring the roadshows to town included Tony Blackburn, Peter Powell, Steve Wright, Mike Read, Adrian John, Simon Mayo, Liz Kershaw and Bruno Brookes.

The event attracted some of the biggest acts of the day including Bros, Danni Minogue, Westlife, Kavana and even Mr Blobby.

Then in 1997, the roadshow brought it's biggest star yet to town, Jon Bon Jovi, followed by The Corrs in 1998.

In 2000, Radio 1 axed the roadshows in favour of One Big Sundays, a series of festival events, with King's Park in Bournemouth announced as one of the venues. But the proposal sparked outcry and meant the town's association with the event came to an end.
