Last year Rob and Josie de Bank decided to spread their wings and launched Common People in Southampton and on this showing it looks like it could run and run.

They already put on Bestival the massive IOW based festival along with family friendly Camp Bestival in Dorset so I was interested to see what Common People would offer to set it apart from either of these.

The most obvious difference is the city center location that looks to have been a good move with easy access afforded to a large target audience with a line up to appeal to the wide local demographic.

Another difference is that there is no camping so it's almost like having two separate festivals on consecutive days with the site emptying on the Saturday and a new crowd returning freshly showered and well rested on the Sunday morning.

Saturday dawned bright and sunny with the threat of rain and thunder later on but the crowd remained optimistic and descended on the site in their shorts and t-shirts hoping for the best.

The entertainment started at eleven with Wild Front and from then on it was pretty fast and furious right through the day with non-stop music spread across four stages.

True to the spirit of the brand the acts varied in appeal from The Chuckle Brothers (who always go down a storm), to most of Public Enemy (Flavor Flav did not make it into the country for reasons unknown) along with a show stealing set from Primal Scream before headliner and local lad Craig David took to the stage to close the first of the two days.

To top off day one the rain and thunder stayed away which was a great omen for day two.

Yet another day of glorious sunshine and blue sky greeted the crowd on day two who arrived nice and early to avoid the queues.

The entertainment started just as early with another varied musical offering.

No dilemma with clothing choice but a strong line up on the Joiners curated Uncommon Stage left me with a musical dilemma.

There was the obvious draw of the more established acts on the main stage but in the end a balance between the two won the day.

Moving between the two meant catching acts as varied as Mr Motivator, Kassassin Street, Chas and Dave and The Rising before settling in one spot to catch Katy B and Festival headliners Duran Duran who closed the weekend with a set full of crowd pleading hits and a confetti cannon farewell.

Josie and Rob and their huge team of organisers have done it again, providing a great weekend of entertainment that could grow even more next year. And if it does I will definitely be there.
