CULT favourite Robot Wars returns to our television screens tomorrow night - and all eyes will be on Bournemouth’s iconic Razer.

Built in 1988, Razer holds the highest win record for any robot in the BBC2 show’s history.

The mean machine, designed and built in Bournemouth by Ian Lewis and Simon Scott, has 41 victories under its belt.

Ian says he created Razer because he thought a team from a comprehensive school could take on the Oxbridge sides of series one.

Describing Razer as having “the greatest legacy of any robot in the history of the show” team captain Ian is looking forward to taking on all challengers.

The BBC announced it was bringing back Robot Wars with “more robots, battles and science than ever before” earlier this year.

Following the format of the original series, which aired on TV from 1998 to 2002, teams of amateur roboteers will see their imaginatively-armed creations go head-to-head with the sole purpose of destroying their competitor.

Fans will fondly remember house robots such as Sir Killalot, Shunt and Sergeant Bash, which took on competitors under the watchful eye of host Craig Charles and pit reporter Philippa Forrester, although the first series was helmed by Jeremy Clarkson.

This latest series will be fronted by Dara O’Briain and Angela Scanlon, and include commentary from Jonathan Pearce.

Razer is recognised as one of the most successful competitors in the series’ history and gained a massive fan following as champion of the fifth series.

It was also runner-up in the sixth, and won the first two Robot Wars World Championships.

Razer’s main weapon is its ripping hydraulic piercer which applies an impressive three tonnes of pressure.

Robot Wars will be screened at 8pm, Sunday, on BBC 2.
