A DRIVER has been charged with perverting the course of justice for allegedly claiming he was dead after receiving a speeding ticket.

Officers from Dorset Police’s No Excuses team said the man was behind the wheel of a vehicle caught speeding on a mobile camera.

Letters were then received by the courts and the police suggesting the driver of the vehicle had died since the speeding offence, it is alleged.

A spokesperson from No Excuses said the team dealt with a “serious matter in Bournemouth custody suite” earlier this month.

“We were not out and about much on Wednesday, as the team were dealing with a serious matter in Bournemouth custody suite,” a spokesperson from No Excuses said.

“A gentleman had been caught speeding on a mobile speed camera and submitted letters to Dorset Police and the court implying that the male driving had died,” the spokesperson said.

“Suspicions were raised and following a number of enquiries it was established that this was a clear attempt to avoid prosecution.”

A man has now been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice in connection with the alleged offence.

Officers with the No Excuses team also seized a Citroen van after its driver, a plumber, was spotted texting at the wheel.

The driver, who is from Yeovil, had never had business insurance, police allege.

A Mini driver was also pulled over after being spotted tailgating another car at 80 miles per hour on the Upton Bypass, officers claim.

The spokesperson said: “Tailgating causes real emotions in people and quite rightly so.

“We are seeing examples of this on an increasing basis.”

Earlier this month, a red Ford Focus was spotted travelling at more than 100 miles per hour on the Dorset Way.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly failed to stop.

Following a short pursuit around Canford Heath the driver ran from the vehicle.

A man was detained shortly after and arrested on suspicion of careless driving, failure to stop for police and driving without due care and attention.

The vehicle was also seized.

A driver was also caught in Hanham Road, Wimborne, overtaking on one roundabout and then undertaking on another.

The driver was unaware that she was being recorded on camera by police in an unmarked Ford Focus.

She received a fixed penalty ticket for driving without due care and attention.
