A NEW guide to Poole Harbour has been issued by the Dorset Coast Forum in response to the rising numbers of canoeists taking to the water.

This waterproof guide, funded by Natural England and the RNLI, gives canoeists a wealth of information on the harbour's unique wildlife and includes tips on how to stay safe on the water.

Sue Burton, Natural England, explained: "With so many users sharing the waters and shores of Poole Harbour it can be difficult to ensure that the wildlife is protected.

"This leaflet is a perfect example of how to enjoy the wonders of our coastline in a safe and environmentally friendly manner, whilst not threatening the habitats of the rare bird species that rely on the rich food sources here in the harbour."

Topics covered include where bird sensitive areas are located, how to avoid disturbing protected wildlife and information on car parks, slipways and the harbour's tidal currents.

The leaflet looks to address issues raised concerning the disturbance of birds within the harbour as a result of a rise in the number and frequency of canoeists taking to the water.

Local organisations want to raise awareness of the bird sensitive areas whilst also encouraging canoeists to take an interest in the harbour’s wildlife in a way which minimises disturbances, said a Natural England spokesman.

Other organisations involved in producing the leaflet include the National Trust, RSPB, Poole Harbour Canoe Club, Poole Harbour Commissioners, Dorset Wildlife Trust, Borough of Poole and Birds of Poole Harbour.

It has been distributed to water sport businesses and clubs around the harbour.
