Attending martial arts classes is a popular way of learning both self-defence as well as engaging exercise that helps to de-stress after a tough day. Wutan martial arts was founded by Grandmaster Liu Yun Qiao in 1966, but can trace its heritage back hundreds of years, provides instruction in this. It is complete with varying systems, such as Tai Chi and Kung Fu. Whether you want to find a way to feel defended against hardships in your daily life or just want a hobby to be able to commit to, there is an option for you.

Kung fu, an ancient Chinese martial art, promotes, self-defence, confidence, health and fitness. It is a large system complete with over 300 styles all over the world. Locally, there are both family and adult classes taking place across the week. For example, there are currently online classes on Mondays, and in person classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays. These are currently taking place in West Parley, Ferndown. I personally have found these classes to be relieving and empowering. Kung Fu especially I find to help me feel better about myself and safer in the sense that I have a way to defend myself. Furthermore, Tai Chi is an art that addresses the interconnection between body and mind, physical state and mental state. The benefits are vast and wide, and if what you need is to learn how to relax, then Tai Chi is for you.

Wutan instructor, Matt Young, expressed, “From Kung Fu I receive power, speed, courage and action. From Tai Chi I receive stillness, balance, patience and inaction.”

It is certain that for many, taking part in these classes has helped gain self-confidence and relieve tension.

Master They, of Wutan, has said, “In a gentle way I use Tai Chi to keep peace in the world. In a stronger way I have Baji to control Heaven and earth.”

Martial Arts is not just an exercise, it is a way that allows you to feel free and calm within your body. It gives you control in your life. It is for physical and mental development, and also entertainment.

Of course, there are other Wutan classes outside BCP/Dorset that are led by other instructors. For more information on a local branch of Wutan, visit https://ringwoodmartialarts.uk/
