AS temperatures finally start to increase and Summer can be seen on the horizon, the Daily Echo looks at pictures of our beaches through the years.

It would seem odd to see beachgoers in suits and dresses these days. But in the 1920s, it wouldn’t have looked out of place at all.

In stark contrast, most of us would today opt for shorts, a t-shirt and sandals. But 100 years ago things were very different.

The over-dressed look wasn't limited to the sands. It was common for men and women to wear all-in-one bathing suits that revealed very little flesh.

Since bathers in the 1920s were worried about others seeing them in any form of undress, they changed into and out of their costumes in wooden bathing machines.

So that fewer people saw people's shins and forearms, these wooden huts were wheeled all the way down to the water.

But beach fashions changed, as these pictures taken locally throughout the decades show.
