Students studying for their A-levels can finally rest easy. Across the country, those enrolled in higher education had their results last week.

Many were filled with anticipation as the results of local students' hard work and dedication were revealed. Eventually, hundreds of learners discovered whether they'd achieved the grades they desired.

Some will be rewarded with the placements or career paths they had been aiming for, but for others, the results may necessitate a revision of their plans.

As important and life-changing as this week has been to the students involved, many have gone through the process in previous years, including those featured in these snaps from results day 20 years ago.

The date was August 14, 2003, when Daily Echo photographers visited various colleges and sixth forms to capture the highs, lows, cheers and tears.
