CHRISTCHURCH’S ‘living’ advent calendar has been hailed a "great success".

Rotary President Peter Boardman welcomed spectators to the closing performance of the 2023 Christchurch Living Advent Calendar (CLAC) on Christmas Eve.

Crowds enjoyed music from Christchurch Vintage Brass Band in Saxon Square, and heard speeches from those involved in CLAC.

Organised by Christchurch Rotary Club and other volunteers, CLAC is a free-to-attend event which has been running in Christchurch through-out December since 2021.

It sees a performance by a Dorset artist or group every evening – to mark each ‘door’ of the calendar being opened.

Peter Boardman said CLAC 2023 was a huge success, with the surprise performances raising over £20,000 for the 24 charity beneficiaries.

Mr Boardman gave thanks to all those involved, before calling on the mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Vivienne Charrett.

The mayor said she was delighted to open the Christmas Eve CLAC performance, and issued more thanks from Christchurch Town Council to all performers, venues and sponsors, and to the organising group of Christchurch Rotarians and volunteers.

Rotarian Jan Banks, chair of the CLAC organising committee, was then invited to receive a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation from the rotary club.

Ms Banks said: “This year’s event was again a great success, raising ever more funds for local charities despite damp and chilly weather.

"Crowds gathered to enjoy great performances, hosted by the twenty-four venues in the town, many of whom welcomed us with hot chocolate, mulled wine and warm mince pies.

"The event was well supported by local businesses who were once again generous with their donations.

"This festive celebration is now well established in Christchurch - and many performers, sponsors and venues are already requesting slots for CLAC 2024.

"My thanks go to the CLAC team, without whom this event could not have happened, and to everyone who attended each evening to support CLAC 2023.”
