WORK to build a cycle path along a busy Poole road as part of a £102m project will begin next week.

Magna Road, between the Knighton Lane/Provence Drive junction and the new access road into Canford Vale, will have a brand new shared cycle and pedestrian area by July.

The work will also include two new bus shelters replacing old ones, a new pedestrian crossing and improved junction at King John Avenue.

BCP Council said that once complete there will be four kilometre-long sustainable travel route running from Gravel Hill along Queen Anne Drive and Magna Road to Wood Lane.

Work will begin on Monday, March 11 and the authority expects “minimal disruption” to journeys in the area.

Some footway closures will be required at times with temporary pedestrian crossings and temporary traffic lights in place.

Julian McLaughlin, director for infrastructure at BCP Council, said: “I’m pleased to see the next phase of improved walking, wheeling, cycling and bus facilities along the busy Magna Road get underway.

“It’s important we create safe, connected and appealing travel environments for everyone, especially those serving the new communities in this area.

“We hope these improvements will encourage healthier, more sustainable ways of getting around, whether it’s to school, work or leisure activities, both now and for years to come. Thank you to everyone for their patience while this work is undertaken.”

Funded through the government’s Transforming Cities Fund, BCP and Dorset councils said they will build 78 kilometres of new cycle and walking options across six “sustainable travel routes”.

However, last summer it was revealed a large chunk of the project has been scrapped because of rising construction, labour and fuel costs, growing inflation and changes to national design standards.

But there are still some active travel schemes still going ahead later this year including in Ringwood Road, Poole and Castle Lane West from Redhill Roundabout to Broadway Roundabout.

Work has already begun on new cycle lanes in Glenferness Avenue, Bournemouth, and in Darby’s Lane, Poole.

Safer crossing points for pedestrians are also planned from Holdenhurst Road to Ashley Road in Bournemouth and at Turbary Retail Park, along Ringwood Road from Mountbatten Roundabout to West Howe Roundabout.
