RESIDENTS are campaigning to make a stretch of road safer following a fatal motorbike crash.
Those with concerns about Horton Road in Ashley Heath have formed their own action group to call for change.
They have flagged issues including speeding vehicles and ‘danger areas’ near the One Stop convenience store and Moors Valley Country Park entrance.
Last month, a motorcyclist died after crashing with a car in Horton Road.
The male rider, in his 30s and from Brighton, was riding a black Kawasaki when he collided with a black Vauxhall Grandland near to One Stop on February 23.
Police, fire and the ambulance service attended the scene, and the road was closed to motorists and pedestrians.
Floral tributes remain at the crash scene.
Since the incident, the campaigning residents have pushed for their concerns to be heard by police and councillors.
Some attended the St Leonards and St Ives Parish Council meeting on Wednesday, February 28.
The minutes of the full council meeting said: “Several members of the public attended and spoke about their concerns for the safety of Horton Road.
“They raised many issues which they considered impacted on the safety of the road.
“In general, these were: Excessive speed of vehicles, the size and volume of large vehicles using the road, overtaking and the numerous hazards along the road specifically by the One Stop, Moors Valley and the many side roads that exit on to the road.”
It was determined “further discussion was necessary”, and councillor Barry Goringe agreed to place the matter on the agenda for the next full council meeting on Wednesday, March 27.
In the meantime, the residents are using a Horton Road Action Group on Facebook to discuss information, opinions and ideas for improvement.
While the group is newly formed, it is understood many members have long had concerns about Horton Road.
They are expected to summarise their findings and recommendations in a document to present at the meeting late this month.
Their aim is to "make Horton Road a better place for everyone".
