Organisers behind a major community-led art project in Dorchester have announced a new location and categories which will get more children involved in art.

Art in Poundbury’s outdoor painting event, Art in the Squares, will have an extra location and more prizes.

The event is set to take place on Saturday, June 22 from 10am in Jubilee Hall which will see both budding and experienced artists take over the streets of Poundbury and paint the day away until 4pm, where works will be returned and judged.

Organisers have added the Centenary Field off Holmead Walk overlooking Maiden Castle to the list of their locations to paint on the day, which also includes the Duchy Farmhouse, Hayward Square, Coade Square, the Pavilion Green and the Queen Mother Square.

After painting, the artists will go back to jubilee hall for judging and prizegiving for the relevant categories.  Entrants under 16 are expected back at the hall by 2.30pm, with other artists from an hour later.

Two new categories for under 16 and under 12 painters have been included, as Art in Poundbury’s artistic director, Judy Tate, expects a big turnout from those keen in the community to get involved.

She said “We envisage around 100 artists to pitch up on the day and register, but now we have two new categories this number may go up.

Dorset Echo: “Art in the Park was a massive success last year and we intend to repeat that success. We have a host of prestigious judges, with a range of fabulous prizes sponsored by local businesses.”

Ms Tate went on to add that the participating artists will be local from the surrounding area, as well as children from three local schools taking part.

After the work is judged, photographs of all entries will be taken for an online gallery, whilst there will be space for the winner’s work to feature in the group’s community winter exhibition.

In the event of heavy persistent rain, the event will be cancelled 48 hours before. Entry to the event is free for children under 16, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Entry for people over 16 is £5.
