CHERRIES winger Matt Ritchie admits he is keen to break his goalscoring duck and build on his flying start to the Championship season.

The 24-year-old has had a hand in three of Cherries’ eight goals in 2014-15 and is one of just three players – alongside striker Callum Wilson and midfielder Harry Arter – to have featured in all four games.

Ritchie laid on Marc Pugh’s opener in the 4-0 thrashing of Huddersfield on the opening day and sent in the cross which led to a tap-in for Yann Kermorgant in the same game.

The former Swindon man also supplied the delivery from which Wilson netted in the 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Dean Court on Tuesday.

However, Ritchie admits he is itching to hit the back of the net after a number of near-misses - the majority of which were from long range - with the closest seeing him find the left upright with a free-kick against Forest.

He told the Daily Echo: “I would love a goal soon as it would give me a lot of confidence and also help the team.

“It’s getting quite frustrating because I’ve had quite a few shots in his first few games. I was unlucky against Nottingham Forest with the free-kick and I had a few other shots as well.

“Part of being a winger is scoring goals and, hopefully, I can make an impact.

“I feel I can be a goal threat and I try and get myself in scoring positions, so if I get another good chance, hopefully I can stick it away.”

Despite playing a key role in Cherries attacking forays so far this season, Ritchie, who hit nine goals last season, played down his efforts and said he was merely doing his job.

He continued: “If I didn’t have assists to my name then there would be questions asked, because that’s my job and that’s what I set out to do.

“I train hard and practise my delivery so that I can give the players in the box the best chance of scoring a goal in games.

“The main thing is to hit good areas and if you do that then the strikers in the box will score goals. “I don’t get too excited about assists because it’s my job and I’m just trying to do my bit.

“I am happy with my own form but I want to get better and help the team as much as possible.

“I’ve got high expectations of myself and I feel like I’ve made a good start to the season, but more importantly it’s been a good start for the club.”
