POOLE swimmers spooked the opposition to claim more than 100 medals at the Portsmouth Northsea Halloween Open Meet – 38 of them gold.

The results included a clean sweep of the podium places in the boys’ 12yrs 200m individual medley as Morgan Hiles, Finlay Webb and Max Avery worked their magic to come first, second and third. Hiles also won the 100m breaststroke.

Lloyd Arnold and Rafael Packham also produced a potent brew to conjure up six wins apiece.

Arnold won the 12yrs 50m breaststroke, 100 and 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke, Packham the 13yrs 50, 100 and 200m freestyle, 50 and 200m backstroke and 200m medley. Arnold’s 1:08.32 in the 100m freestyle was his first swim under 1min 10sec.

Chris Parsons struck gold five times, winning the 14yrs 50 and 400m freestyle, 50 and 100m breaststroke and 50m backstroke.

Four gold medals went to Summer Torkington, who won the 13yrs 50 and 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 100m medley.

Ollie Weston and Thea O’Keefe each secured a hat-trick of victories. Weston won the 14yrs 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 100m medley. O’Keefe struck gold in the 14yrs 100 and 200m butterfly and 100m medley.

Lucy Steele and Kieran Duffy were both double winners.

Steele reaped the rewards for her hard work in training as she won the 10yrs 200m freestyle and 200m medley.

Duffy won the 11yrs 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Gold also went to Sacha Rines in the 14yrs 50m butterfly, Max Avery in the 12yrs 50m backstroke, Allanah Smithson in the 13yrs 200m butterfly, Matthew Cochrane in the 13yrs 100m medley and Emmeline Ansell in the 13yrs 200m breaststroke.

  • Swim Bournemouth’s claim that their B team had beaten an A team from one of their immediate neighbours for the first time may have been premature.

The B team left their National Arena League West Division One first round gala at Newport earlier this month believing they had pipped Seagulls to fourth place with 235 points to the Christchurch club’s 234 – and prompting a “bragging rights” headline in the Echo.

But the league website shows a revised result with both clubs scoring 234 gala points and Seagulls ahead on league points by virtue of more race wins.

League officials have so far not explained the change despite requests from both clubs and the Echo.

Revised result: 1 Severnside Tritons 272, 2 Torfaen Dolphins 265, 3 Southwold 244, 4 Seagulls 234, 5 Swim Bournemouth B 234, 6 Barnstaple 219, 7 Clevedon 194, 8 Dawlish 132.
