CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe believes hasty appointments are a major factor in the rapid turnover of football managers.

Howe was speaking ahead of Cherries’ clash with Ipswich tomorrow – when the second and third longest-serving managers in the Championship will go head to head.

Former Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy took the reins at Portman Road just three weeks after Howe had returned to Dean Court in October 2012.

The Yorkshireman replaced Paul Jewell with Ipswich marooned at the foot of the Championship and guided them to 14th in his first season.

Like Cherries, Ipswich flirted with the play-off places last season before eventually finishing ninth. A run of one defeat in 13 games has seen them climb to fourth this season.

Rotherham’s Steve Evans, appointed in April 2012, is the longest-serving manager in the Championship and has masterminded successive promotions for the Millers.

However, no fewer than 12 managers have left their posts in the second flight this season with Uwe Rosler at Wigan the latest casualty of the sack race.

Howe told the Daily Echo: “Every club will look at it differently and every owner will have a different opinion.

“In my opinion, if you think you have the right manager for the job then back him and stick with him even through the tough times.

“I think too many appointments, potentially, are made hastily and then people regret their decisions and end up having to change their manager.

“If you believe in the person who is running the football side of things, you should have faith in them in the tough spells. If you feel you have the right man, you have to back your initial judgment.”

Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger is the longest-serving manager in the country having been appointed in September 1996, while three of the top 10 – Paul Tisdale (Exeter), Mark Yates (Cheltenham) and Jim Bentley (Morecambe) – are in League Two.

Howe today moved up one place to become the 21st longest-serving manager in the country following Paul Cox's departure at League Two Mansfield Town. Cox had been ninth on the list.
