GENEROUS Steve Cook says Cherries’ League Cup quarter-final clash with Liverpool is “a game for the fans”.

Eddie Howe’s men will take on the Premier League giants in a competitive match for only the sixth time in their history tonight.

The last-eight tie will see Cherries contest their first League Cup quarter-final and supporters are expected to create a partisan atmosphere at Dean Court.

Cook, a Reds fan, hopes to send home fans away happy in order to repay their loyalty through dark times – such as when the club narrowly avoided extinction six years ago.

He told the Daily Echo: “It’s massive for the club. We’re not far away from a Wembley visit and that’s what we’ve got in sight.

“Liverpool is a huge game and we want another big occasion for the fans after this if we can. Years ago, Bournemouth would have snatched this situation.

“We feel we can do well. It’s going to be a good test for us and the game is for the fans. We know what they have had to endure so we will, hopefully, put on a good performance and progress.

“It’s great for the club and great for the fans and, hopefully, they can get behind us and we can give the supporters more to cheer about.”

The 23-year-old has played just 90 minutes of Cherries’ League Cup run this season with his only appearance coming in the 3-0 second-round win over Northampton.

Cook added: “I haven’t played the past two cup games so it’s fingers crossed on a personal note.

“Whatever the manager’s decision on the team, we are all behind each other and pushing the same way. We’ve had to work hard to get here but I think we deserve to be where we are.

“We will be confident going in. We feel we can compete with anyone. Liverpool are in a transitional phase and, hopefully, we can take advantage of that and come away with a win.”
