IT'S not often the Sydenhams Wessex League bulletin makes your heart skip a beat but this week’s edition certainly had Verwood Town boss Carl Poore hot under the collar.

The league’s official weekly round-up listed Potters assistant-manager Matt Groves as a new signing for rivals Hamworthy United, prompting Poore to scramble for his mobile phone.

“I nearly had a heart attack,” said the Potters boss. “I’ve only just made him my assistant so couldn’t believe my eyes. I sent him a message straight away and thankfully, he was adamant it was definitely not him.”

Meanwhile, Poore is still on the lookout for “one or two new faces” to bolster his squad ahead of Saturday’s curtain raiser at Newport (IOW).

Striker Jack Swann has penned terms at Potterne Park but Josh Buck, dual-registered with Poole Town last term, has opted to gain senior experience with Blackfield & Langley this season.

“Blackfield offered Josh something we couldn’t so we were resigned to losing him from the moment they showed an interest,” added Poore.

“I am really happy with Jack, he has really impressed in pre-season and his threat in front of goal will be a big plus for us.”
