POLAND continued their domination of the sport by racing to a unique double double after winning the junior and senior finals of the 2015 World Team Cup at Poole’s Harbourside Park raceway.

The junior final saw the young Poles take the gold by beating England with Australia taking bronze and Wales finishing fourth.

Poole’s Aaron Smith scored 11 points for England but could not help his side overcome the hard riding eastern Europeans who got away to a fast start to open a 10-point lead at the end of the opening round of races.

England closed the gap to eight points as the match entered its final stages but it was to no avail as Dawid Bas and his Polish side did enough to take gold.

It was more of the same in the senior event with the fast-starting Poles taking full advantage of the inside starting gates to open a six-point lead by the end of the opening four races.

But England staged a great comeback by winning all four of the second round races to draw level, with both sides scoring 23 points.

The battle for the bronze was equally as tight with Wales holding a slender two-point lead over Australia.

England took the match lead in heat nine thanks to a great ride by Paul Heard but the eastern Europeans hit back straight away to level the scores in the following race when Greg Gluchowski charged to the front and was never headed.

Although they only held a three-point lead going into the final round of races, Poland always looked to have the upper hand.

And they wrapped up the title in the penultimate race when Gluchowski led the field across the line, much to the delight of the many Polish supporters who had travelled over to support their side.

Andy Angell made sure of the silver medal for England, forcing a run-off for third between Ben Mould of Wales and Joel Chadwick of Australia which the Welshman won.

The afternoon’s racing was watched by an enthusiastic crowd of more than 1,000, many of whom had travelled to Harbourside Park from as far afield as Australia and Poland to support their home nations.

In all, the Dolphin Shopping Centre-sponsored event was a roaring success thanks to the slick presentation by the management and members of the Poole Cycle Speedway Club.
