SWANAGE & Wareham may have earned a mention in the Salisbury record books following their 31-3 defeat by the Wiltshire outfit on Saturday.

Salisbury officials believe hooker Luke Esnouf’s feat in scoring three tries was the first time in their history that a front-row player had registered a hat-trick.

Esnouf’s treble, which all came in the second half, helped condemn Swans to a ninth successive defeat in South West One East.

Although Swans had the better of the opening exchanges at Castle Road, the Salisbury defence repelled their early efforts.

Salisbury opened the scoring after 30 minutes when skipper Liam Gilbert touched down following a move along the three-quarters with fly-half Tom Lane adding the conversion.

While Swans had the initiative in the final 10 minutes of the first half and took the play into the hosts’ territory, Salisbury continued to resist and took their 7-0 lead into the break.

Swans immediately came under attack early in the second half and, after a penalty to Salisbury, a breakaway saw them double their lead.

Esnouf ploughed his way past the Swans defence to put the home side 19-0 ahead before the visitors opened their points account when fly-half Phil Graves slotted home a penalty from inside the Salisbury 22 to make it 19-3.

But the day belonged to Esnouf who forced his way over the Swans line twice in the final five minutes to give the scoreline a look which did not reflect the way the Swans had played for most of the game.

Swans: Spencer, Parry, Elford, Stephens, Young, Graves, Tomes, Sheldrake, Elford, Audley (Wyburgh, 47), Corsie, Hogg, Ford, Dennett, Scott.

  • Tries from Will Drummond and Charlie Davis, coupled with two penalties from Nathan Brown, failed to save Oakmeadians from going down 42-16 at the hands of Bournemouth IIs.

Patrick White and James Dickinson both scored tries in Oaks’ 29-14 defeat at Lytchett, while Louis Van-Langanhove registered two conversions.

Tries from Mike Mitchell (2), Richard Morrison (2) and Sam Andrews (2), plus four conversions from Rhys Parker, earned Oaks’ IIIs a 38-15 win at Bridport.

Oaks' ladies registered an 8-5 win over local rivals Ellingham & Ringwood in the National Junior Cup thanks to Kiera Paul-Jones's late try and a penalty from Claire Dorey.
