EVERTON manager Roberto Martinez reckons sticking with an open style of football could help Cherries finish their first Premier League season with a flourish.

Martinez, who saw Cherries rescue a 3-3 draw from a frantic finale at Dean Court on Saturday, was coy on whether Eddie Howe’s men could maintain top-flight status and comparisons to his team at Wigan but insisted his opposite number should not veer from his passing principles.

Asked about Cherries’ survival hopes, Martinez said: “It is very early in the season. I’m sure that Bournemouth have a winning mentality having achieved promotion last season. They have a real continuity at the club with the manager and the players.

“All you can do from game to game is accumulate as many points as you can. I don’t see anyone fighting relegation in November.”

On the Wigan link, he continued: “Every team is different. The mentality, the football philosophy and style of wanting to be on the ball, score goals and win games from that mindset is similar, of course.

“I think that sort of approach can give you a real strong end to the season because you are playing in the same manner and when you have goals in your side, you always have an opportunity to win matches.”
