EDDIE Howe admits Cherries’ young recruits will have to show patience and maturity if they are to be a success at Vitality Stadium.

Of Howe’s six permanent summer signings, five are no older than 22, with defender Marc Wilson a relative elder statesman at 29.

Adaptable full-back Brad Smith is 22, while Jordon Ibe, Lys Mousset and Emerson Hyndman are 20 and Lewis Cook is 19.

Nathan Ake, brought in on a temporary deal from Chelsea, is 21 but Arsenal loan star Jack Wilshere has more years in his locker at 24.

Reflecting generally on the mindset his youngsters should adopt this season, Howe told the Daily Echo: “I think they will have to show a degree of patience.

“Everyone wants to play, that’s the first thing I’d say to that. All players in my squad want to start but not everyone can start, I can only pick 11.

“They need to take the longer-term view, develop, learn how we play and let us coach them and make them better players.

“If they can show that maturity then their careers are going to really blossom because they’re all outstanding players.”

Asked if it was difficult to convince youngsters to take a long-term approach, Howe added: “I think sometimes players know themselves that they’re not quite ready and they need a little bit of work.

“Sometimes you have to sit them down and have a different conversation and tell them a little bit more firmly that they have work to do.

“But in some senses you don’t want to take that desire to play away from them. It’s that fire and that determination to succeed that’s going to make them the players they’re going to be.

“It’s a delicate balance but, so far, the players have all shown a terrific attitude.”
