MATTY Holmes is hoping to add a couple of new faces to his Wimborne Town squad, albeit not in time for the Magpies' meeting with Mangotsfield United tomorrow.

The Cuthbury outfit lie fifth in the Southern South & West table following a strong start to their league campaign.

But Holmes admitted the two-week break his wafer-thin squad had enjoyed following their draw at Slimbridge had come at a particularly opportune moment.

“I’m really pleased with how we’ve started,” said Holmes. “When we put our best 11 on the pitch we’re a match for anyone.

“If we lose our best players we could find ourselves in a bit of trouble, though. That’s why I need to strengthen a little bit.

“We’re waiting to try to get two in but they’re unlikely to be ready for Saturday.”

Holmes revealed his troops had been “on their knees” after playing eight games in league and cup competitions in August.

But the manager has detected a burning desire among his players to get going again this week.

“The lads are really looking forward to it,” said Holmes. “Like any footballer, they’re raring to play.

“It’ll be a tough game. Mangotsfield are a very strong side. But if you prepare right you’ve got a chance.”
