SCOTT Mitchell’s hopes of becoming World Seniors champion were dashed after a 3-0 defeat to Robert Thornton.

Dorset ace Mitchell was among the favourites to win the event at the Circus Tavern in Essex.

The 52-year-old began his challenge strongly, sweeping aside Peter Manley 3-0 in the opening round on Thursday evening.

But facing 2022 champion Thornton proved to be a step too far on Saturday.

Mitchell led 2-1 in the opening set, but the Scot rallied to win it in a deciding leg with a 15-darter.

Scotty Dog hit back with a big 116 checkout to lead set two, but again was pegged back as Thornton took a 2-0 lead.

A 120 out shot from Mitchell saw him go ahead in set three, but that proved to be the final leg he won as former UK Open and World Grand Prix winner Thornton closed out victory.
