BOURNEMOUTH Poppies extended their stay in the Wessex League’s top division to at least 38 years following a 2-0 victory over Moneyfields at Victoria Park.

Phill Brown’s charges left it until the final day of the campaign to secure their Premier League status, with second-half goals from Sami Garcia and Addwell Chipangura enough to stave off Pagham, who themselves were victorious over Baffins Milton Rovers.

Founder members of the Wessex League in 1986, Poppies have remained in the league’s top tier for almost four decades.

Originally a one-tier league, the Wessex League system has been restructured many times over the years, with Poppies remaining in the top division for all 38 years.

The first half was a tight affair low on goalscoring opportunities, with Cherries youngster Noah Crisp in the Poppies’ goal largely unbothered.

Poppies would find their goals shortly after the break, Garcia opening scores on 52 minutes. Seven minutes later the hosts had a second, effectively putting the game to bed.

Chipangura rounded off a Poppies counter with a fine finish, ensuring his side end the campaign above the relegation zone in 17th.

Poppies: Crisp, Medway, Freak, Carkeet, Turner, Garcia, McMonagle (Edwards, 87), Manuel, Graham, Chipangura, Lamb (Wilson, 75).

Unused subs: Reilly, Ford, Mantle.
