WIMBORNE Town returned to the summit of the Southern League Division One South after coming out on top of a five-goal thriller with promotion rivals Mousehole.

The Cornish side had taken an early lead at New Cuthbury through Jack Bray-Evans, before three Wimborne goals in 12 second-half minutes from Connor Cocklin, Harry Morgan and Lewis Beale turned the game on its head.

Hayden Turner’s late goal threatened a grandstand finish, but proved scant consolation as Wimborne held on to finish the game 3-2 winners.

Boss Tim Sills made three changes to the side held 0-0 by promotion rivals Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Harry Morgan, Lewis Beale, and Ben Scorey came into the side at the expense of Jack Lovell, Josh Carmichael, and Sam Griffin.

There were widespread changes just before kick-off, when match official deemed Mousehole’s green and white horizontal stripes to be too similar to Magpies’ home strip of white and black vertical stripes.

Wimborne instead donned their away strip despite their home advantage, with their guests not bringing an alternative set of kit with them.

After 14 minutes, the away side would be in the lead. Timothy Nixon did the hard work, his run seeing the winger round Magpies keeper Ross Flitney before teeing up Bray-Evans to open scores.

Wimborne huffed and puffed for an equaliser before the break, the closest they came Billy Walker’s effort that was ruled out for offside.

They took just six second-half minutes to restore parity, defender Cocklin nodding home after Walker had flicked Oakley Hanger’s free-kick on.

On the hour mark, Wimborne would have a second. Cocklin was involved again, the centre-back heading the ball onto the bar from Jez Bedford’s cross.

Handily, Morgan was on hand to stab home and put Magpies ahead.

Four minutes later, the glut of goals continued. Beale was released into space inside the box, before lashing the ball past Oliver Chenoweth to make it three.

It was not all plain sailing, as substitute Turner capitalised upon Flitney’s spillage to pull one back.

But Mousehole could not find an equaliser, allowing Wimborne to rise back up to first.

Magpies: Flitney, Hanger, Walker, Cocklin, Jackson, Scorey, Bedford (Griffin, 71), Neale, Morgan (Satterley, 69), Beale, Baker (Lovell, 85).
