POOLE Town boss Matt Tubbs feels new recruit Josh Staunton will prove to be an “invaluable” addition to Dolphins, stating his belief that the former Yeovil captain will raise his new teammates’ levels.

Dolphins announced the coup signing on Saturday, with Staunton dropping from Boreham Wood in the fifth tier of English football to help bolster a promotion push that has faltered due to three defeats in a row.

An England C international, Staunton has played over 200 professional games, largely in the National League, the top tier of non-league.

At 28 years of age, it is hoped that the centre-back’s best years are ahead of him.

Discussing the signing, Tubbs told the Daily Echo: “I spoke to him on numerous occasions.

“He will give us that experience I feel that we don't necessarily have in abundance at the moment.

“He’s a natural leader and he was captain of Yeovil for x-amount of years.

“So he's going to be a massive addition to the football club between now and the end of the season, and however long that we tie him up for.

“What he brings as well is competition to the team which is great, which is what we want.

“We want to have a couple of positions throughout the whole squad that everyone's competing for because it just raises everyone in training and games.

“Everyone's got to be on it from when they step out on the training pitch or when they step out on match day.

“Application has to be right, I feel as if he'll bring us like that.

“That will be invaluable to us.”

Staunton will be available for Poole’s clash with Hayes & Yeading on Tuesday evening (7.45pm), with Dolphins requiring victory to get their campaign back on track.

Poole have shipped 12 goals in their last three games, with Tubbs stating this side need to maintain a high performance on a consistent basis.

“Just the level of consistency that we don't have,” replied the former Cherries striker when asked what the message had been after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at home to Hanwell.

“I mean we can for 60, 70 minutes.

“We were so good against Salisbury and then we drop off the latter part of the game.

“We didn't start well (against Hanwell) for 45 minutes and the second half we've done really well.

“You can't have that inconsistency throughout games and that ended up biting you on the bum a little bit.

“We need to capitalise on good play and getting into the final third, and then be more creative.

“I feel, we have to be more clinical at both ends -clearing our lines but also sticking the ball in the net.”
