MICHAEL Watson’s amazing success continued at Tehidy Park where he scooped his eighth win in 29 days to maintain his total supremacy in the West.

This time the Wessex Golf Centre player managed to ease out Cornwall pair Grant Slater (Trevose) and Chris Gill (Newquay) by one shot with an unspectacular but steady two-under-par 69 over the tricky Cornish course.

He dropped a shot at the 329-yard third, drew level at the next and accelerated with further gains at the sixth, eighth and 12th before shedding his only other shot at the index one 443-yard 15th that claimed many victims.

Watson took a long time to show his true form this year and only collected his first win at Cotswold Hills on June 2.

But he was the outstanding success in July. The former Bournemouth Alliance captain collected two Order of Merit wins at Dudsbury and in the Forest Classic and five other pro-am triumphs until continuing where he left off by claiming the first win in August.

Slater’s talents are displayed so little in the summer because of his Trevose commitments, but he invariably features near the top. He finished in the top seven for the sixth time in seven outings, making birdies at the sixth, 11th and 18th.

PGA Cup player Gill is fortunate that Newquay allow him time to play and this was his best finish of the season, although he did win the Fourball Championship with Sean Mason at Teign Valley. Birdies at the fourth, tenth and 16th were negated by bogeys at the 12th and 15th.

Gill also brought home the winning team on 83 points, one ahead of Richard Sadler (Killiow) and Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew).
